Day 2: 2/2/13
We woke up early in the morning as we were told that the van for island hopping would pick us up at 8.30 am. Plus, the pick up would be at Desa Motel instead of our motel. We had also decided to check-out and find other accommodation, after our one night assessment of the motel.
Whilst waiting for the van, we had breakfast at a small stall outside Desa Motel. They had pre-packed the food and they had a lot of reasonably-priced choices.
After a while, the van came. An old van. We entered into the van and went to the meeting point to take the speed boat, near the Awana Porto Malai hotel. As it was low tide, we had to take the boat from the Awana Porto Malai’s jetty instead of the usual one.
Langkawi is actually an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea. And basically, the island hopping in Langkawi covers 3 islands:
- Pulau Dayang Bunting / Pregnant Maiden Island
- Pulau Singa Besar / Big Lion Island
- Pulau Beras Basah / Wet Rice Island
These 3 islands have their own attractions: a giant lake at Pulau Dayang Bunting, eagle feeding at Pulau Singa Besar, and the crystal clear water and white beach at Pulau Beras Basah.
The scenery along the journey was nice. Just like in Phuket with a lot of limestone. So, we went to the first island, the Pulau Dayang Bunting.
Inside the island is the lake, known as the Tasik Dayang Bunting / Pregnant Maiden Lake. You can swim in the lake but it is recommended to rent a safety jacket for RM 5 [with a RM 5 refundable deposit] = RM 10.
It was a climb before reaching the lake. I was really exhausted when I reached the lake. Initially, I thought I just wanted to sit around, but finally, I jumped into the lake. ;p
After spending like an hour or so here, we continued our journey to Pulau Singa Besar, for eagle feeding. Langkawi’s landmark is the eagle as a lot of eagles can be found here. Even the name Langkawi – Lang is an abbreviation for Helang, which is eagle in the Malay Language.
So, off we went, to see the eagles being fed…
