Day 1: 9 February 2017

Besar pulak tu.

When we arrived at Abu Dhabi, our first stop was to the toilet. I have a habit where I would try very hard not to use the lavatory. My ‘cute’ size prohibits me from using the lavatory with comfort. I made the right decision since Abu Dhabi’s toilet was so nice. It was huge too.

Leaving Abu Dhabi International Airport

Boarding pass diorang tak tengok pulak masa aku scan tu.

After we have done with our toilet break, we went to the Flight Transfer counter. If not for the short 3 hours and 15 minutes layover, I would have gone straight to the arrival area and get my passport stamped with UAE’s stamp. Tips: Be prepared to remove your watch, belt and the usual metal items since there will be another body scan before being allowed to the departure area.

Bye Abu Dhabi!

Kalaulah KLIA kita sesibuk ni jadi hab, kan bagus.

After the scanning was done, I looked at the information screen to confirm my departure gate. We would depart from Terminal 3, Gate 48. Wait, what?! Gate 48! Yes, it was a very long walk to Gate 48 but thanks to the signage, we managed to find the gate without any hassle.

I only have praises for Etihad Airways

Memandangkan waktu Subuh masih ada, kitorang bersolat dulu sebab surau tak jauh pun dari Gate 38. Lepas solat, aku tanya Mira “Sayang, abang baru teringat, kita ada bawak selipar tak? Kita dah lah ada duduk hostel, takkan nak masuk jamban kaki ayam je?”. Baru kami sedar, kami tak bawah selipar pun! Aku pun cari money changer, tukar 50 Euro ke duit Dirham dan mula mencari selipar. Selipar tak dapat last-last fridge magnet Abu Dhabi yang aku beli. Hahahaa.

We still had time for Subuh prayers, so we performed our obligation and after the prayers, back to the waiting area, I remembered something. I asked my wife, “Dear, did we bring any flip flop?”. Oh, no, I just realized we did not bring one. We would be staying in hostels too so we really need to have flip flop especially for toilet purposes. I looked for money changer, changed my 50 Euros to UAE Dirham and guess what? I could not find any so I ended up buying a fridge magnet.

The thick clouds below

Masa tu suhu Abu Dhabi 14 darjah celcius. Memang nyaman! Tepat jam 9.15 am, kapal terbang pun berlepas.

To kill time, I Facetimed my family and surfed the Internet until 8.20 am, we were allowed to board the plane. We rode a bus from the gate to the plane and the temperature was 14 degree celcius. It was so pleasant. At 9.15 am, we departed to Amsterdam.

In between the 2 layers of thick clouds

Sempatlah layan 2 filem.

Etihad Airways did not make me hungru at all. In the beginning of the flight, I was served with biscuits. Then, I had roasted chicken for lunch and before landing, I had a turkey sandwich. The food was so delicious! Whilst on the flight, I changed my watch to Amsterdam’s time zone and I did not sleep at all since we would be arriving at 2.05 pm and I did not want to confuse myself. I even managed to watch 2 movies throughout the whole flight.

Arriving!

Aku tengok luar, nampak berawan je dan matahari terik membahang terasa kat luar sebab aku duduk tepi tingkap. Sampailah nak dekat pukul 2 petang, juruterbang cakap bersedia untuk mendarat. Masa kapal terbang tengah menurun, aku tengok awan tebal sangat-sangat menutupi langit bawah tu.

The view on the outside was magical. Moments before landing, I could see thick clouds beneath me. After the plane went through the thick clouds, there was another layer of thick clouds beneath. No wonder winter is so cold! Sun could not get through, at least not in Amsterdam.

Welkom in Amsterdam

Aku panik sekejap. Hehe. Ya lah, first time kan flight jauh macam ni, masa musim sejuk pulak tu. Akhirnya, lepas lapisan kedua, nampaklah kawasan darat, nampak pokok tak ada daun, nampak suasana gelap dan mendung, nampak sungai dan terusan, nampak rumah yang design dia lain dan tak pernah aku tengok selama ni.

Looking at the thick clouds made me panicked. “Can the pilot make his way?” I was thinking. Finally, after bracing through the second layer, I could see land, gloomy weather, cloudy, dark, canals, houses. It looked totally different.

And the journey begins.

Macam orang Belanda cakap, Welkom in Amsterdam. Suhu: -4 darjah celcius.

And finally, at 2.05 pm, we landed in Amsterdam. As the Dutch says: Welkom in Amsterdam. Temperature: -4 degree Celsius.
