Lunch and Dinner in Penang, Malaysia – Where to Go?

Where to go for Lunch and Dinner in Penang?

Penang is a food heaven. In fact, Penang was listed in CNN Travel as one of the best street food destinations in Asia. Among its many heritage buildings, there are a lot of hawker centres and restaurants to cater to different taste-buds of the visitors. However, when there are many options available, there will be a problem of which one to choose. We encounter that problem too. We will often ask each other “where to go for lunch and dinner in Penang?“.

Penang. Apart from its history, food is another forte of this city-state.

While there are many available places to choose from, if we are in Penang for a day, there will be two places which we will always go. One for lunch and another for dinner. Ask our friends and they will surely know that these two places are our obligatory eateries to have lunch and dinner in Penang.

Lunch and Dinner in Penang at Mee Sotong Hameed Pata

The first place that we will always go to for lunch and dinner in Penang is Mee Sotong Hameed Pata. We first knew about this place from our friend. She told us that we must at least try and have our lunch and dinner in Penang at this eatery. We never knew where the place is and our first visit was by getting a Grab car.

Mee Sotong Hameed Pata or Hameed Pata’s Cuttlefish Noodle is sandwiched between many other eateries at Esplanade’s food court. Judging from the outside, the place does not look like a famous eatery. It looks very humble just like any Ali, Muthu and Ah Hock’s hawker stall.

The addictive mee sotong

Nevertheless, if you visit the place during lunch or early dinner, there will be a queue. The noodle is cooked upon order which make it fresh and the noodle is best eaten hot. Mee Sotong Hameed Pata is a simple dish consisting of noodles, cuttlefish sambal and some garnishing. Still, it is full of flavours. I have tried another mee sotong at another food court but it is still a long way from Hameed Pata’s delicious version.

A single serving is RM 5 and the extra noodles version is RM 9 per plate. A very reasonable price for a very delectable dish, no wonder it is a must-go place for lunch and dinner in Penang.

Nasi Kandar Deens Maju, another must go

Another place that we really recommend is Nasi Kandar Deens Maju at Jalan Gurdwara. Forget about Nasi Kandar Beratur or the over-rated Line Clear. Nasi Kandar Deens Maju is really the place to go for lunch and dinner in Penang!

Penang has a huge amount of Indian Muslims and together with their existence in this melting pot city, they bring along their Nasi Kandar dish. We will not explain how nasi kandar derived its name from but we will tell you about how amazing the food at Deens Maju are.

This eatery is famous during lunch up until dinner time. They open from 2.30 pm to 11.00 pm and during peak hours, there will be a long line of customers patiently lining up to get served. While all nasi kandar eateries serve curry and fried chicken, what make Deens Maju different is the fried chicken. Their fried chicken is cooked perfectly with herbs which have been cleverly infused into the chicken meat during marinating process.

Apart from that, the curry tastes different according to which curry that you choose. The perfect dish would be to have kuah campur where all the curries are poured together onto the rice. That is why Deens Maju is the to-go place for lunch and dinner in Penang.

They are also available on Grab Food, which means that if you are lazy to go out and queue (just like yours truly, at times), you can just get the nasi kandar delivered to your hotel lobby. For me, the delivery option is better because the kuah curry will be absorbed perfectly by the rice.

So, there you go. If you are confused where to go for lunch and dinner in Penang, head over to the two places mentioned and you will not regret it!
