Is Taipei 101 Worth a Visit?
A lot of people are thinking, is Taipei 101 worth a visit? After all, it is just another skyscraper in skyscraper-frenzy Asia. We had the same thought too. Our country has the tallest twin towers in the world, so why should we visit another tower? Especially since Taipei 101 beat KLCC as the tallest building in the world back in 2004. Yet, on our first day, we decided to visit Taipei 101. Our verdict? Taipei 101 is worth a visit!
After we have rested at the hotel, we went out to the MRT station to go to Taipei 101. It was peak hour and people are swarming in the MRT stations. Since we are going to Taipei 101, we had to take the MRT to Daan station on the Brown Line and change to the Red Line.
The escalators were full with people coming back from work. A bit of advice when taking the escalator in Taipei: If you do not plan to walk, stand on the right side. We got confused since in Malaysia, we stand on the left side. So, we stood on the left initially until a lady informed us that we were supposed to stand on the right.
So, why is Taipei 101 worth a visit?
Taipei 101 is worth a Visit because it is very accessible
It is very easy to go to Taipei 101. It is easily accessible by taking the MRT Red Line to Taipei 101 / World Trade Centre station. We went to Taipei 101 by taking the MRT because although there are taxis and public buses, most Taiwanese (except for the younger ones) do not speak English. So, it is easier to take the MRT. That is why Taipei 101 is worth a visit – it is very easy to get to!
It was once the tallest building in the world
Before Taipei 101, the Petronas Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world. And between 2004 to 2010, before Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101 was the tallest building in the world. I have always wanted to see Taipei 101 ever since I was in high school. I watched Meteor Garden in 2002 and I thought “Wow, Taiwan is so modern!”. Kuala Lumpur was still developing back then. Then, when I learnt about Taipei 101 in 2004, I have always wanted to visit it.
I was amused how Taiwan managed to built Taipei 101 especially because Taiwan is a country prone to earthquakes and typhoons. For me, it is an architectural wonder to have a tall tower in such a country. Moreover, it was the tallest tower for 6 years. Because of this, Taipei 101 is worth a visit.
Taipei 101 is worth a visit because the entrance is inexpensive
Another reason why Taipei 101 is worth a visit is because its entrance fee is cheap. It costs RM 80 (around USD 20) to go to the top floors of the Petronas Twin Towers. However, the entrance fee for Taipei 101 is just NTD 60 (around USD 19). A difference of USD 1 but still cheaper than the Petronas Twin Towers. Plus, if you book the ticket via Klook, it is also possible to get a deal i.e. the entrance to Taipei 101 plus something else.
Taipei 101 has the most unique wind damper
This is the very reason why Taipei 101 is worth a visit. Its wind damper! Taipei 101 is built in a country which has regular earthquakes and typhoons. So, how can the tower stands during such occurrences? By having a giant wind damper in the middle of the tower. During earthquakes and typhoons, the wind damper will swing to ensure that the tower remains stable.
The wind damper in Taipei 101 is open to public (yet another reason why you should visit Taipei 101!) and you can see how gigantic it is. If you are ‘lucky’, you can see how the wind damper works. If you are ‘unlucky’ like us, you can watch the video and see by yourselves how it works. Totally an amazing engineering feat.
The view from above is simply stunning
The last reason why it is worth it to visit Taipei 101 is due to the amazing view from above. Yes, be it daytime or night time, the view is so magnificent.
There you go. Some of the reasons why you should visit Taipei 101. Enticed to go? You can buy your entrance ticket beforehand and cut the queue by buying it from Klook here.
