Hola! The People Behind Kaki Jalans

My name is Khairul Idzwan, but most people just call me Khai. I am a Malaysian travel blogger who blog at Kaki Jalans together with my wife, Amira and this is our canvas, where we write and put everything that we experienced into words and photos to be shared with all of you.

When did we start travelling?

I started travelling ever since I was a baby! I looked at my old photos and I saw a photo of my old 3 or 4 months self having a short excursion with my family at Genting Highlands in Pahang, Malaysia. In fact, when I was growing up, my family used to bring me for short getaways all around Malaysia.

Kaki Jalans bitten by travel bug

However, I did not really go for travel adventures until 2011, when I finally got bitten by travel bug by having my first solo backpacking trip to Thailand for a week. Since then, I have visited almost all the countries in ASEAN and five countries in Europe.

In 2015, I got married to Amira and ever since she got married with me, she got bitten by travel bug too. We never looked back since then. From only Malaysia, she has been to 12 countries altogether as at 2019! Now, we are looking forward to more travel adventures with our daughter who was born in 2018.

How can we Kaki Jalans travel periodically?

We are not from a well off family. We grew up in a middle income family just like most of you. Most of our travel journeys were done out of our own pocket money. There are people who asked us how we could afford to travel all the time. The answer is, we did not travel all the time. We are, just like any other Malaysians out there, periodical travellers who travel when there are cheap bargains and when the time is convenient.

We travel because of passion, because we really want to see this world apart from our home country, to experience the culture, feel the environment and immerse in the scenery. This passion of ours gave birth to Kaki Jalans.

Kaki Jalans and beyond

Kaki Jalans was formerly my personal blog where I rambled just about anything that I wanted to. After my backpacking trip to Thailand in 2011, I started to write on my journeys to share with others and as my personal diary. Since then, I have never stopped writing and now, together with Amira, Kaki Jalans existed as our sharing space, to share with others about our journeys and other tips on travelling.

Kaki Jalans is a blog which encapsulates what we saw and what we experienced before sharing it with the readers so that the readers can follow our journeys and virtually experience what we experienced. Check out Kaki Jalans accolades here!

Hi greeting from Indonesia here ๐Ÿ™‚
I read your story about your ancestor from Java in Timothy’s blog. From what part in Java your grandpa came from?

      • Actually not my grandpa. My great grandpa was from Java. But I am not sure from which area he came from.

One thing I know is that I still have an uncle living in Yogjakarta. He is the cousin of my dad where his dad is my late grandmother’s brother but from a different mother. Confusing isn’t it? Haha.

I was told that he is an important person in Indonesia but I am not sure what his position is. His name is Slamet Riyanto bin Salamun.

Bro….thanks for the nice blog…really give me input…anyway how much cost of your backpackers to Bangkok?? Me is still in making budget…hope get an estimate cost from you…thank you…

      • You’re welcome bro! ๐Ÿ™‚ All in seminggu tu tak sampai RM 1,000.00 pun. Roughly dalam RM 800. Sebab tak naik flight. Masa kat sana naik bas, kalau tren pulak ambil yg paling murah. Satu lagi, kalau naik MRT/BTS, cuba beli tourist pass mcm Singapore pny tu. Lg jimat kalau nak byk jalan. I did not buy the pass then sbb tak tahu. Dah balik Malaysia baru tau.

Bila nak ke Bangkok? The place is really nice. Mesti rasa nak datang blk. Hehe

    4. hi, just wondering if you happen to know anyone who has been on a journey from KL to Vietnam via thailand and laos.. on land.

    17. I really like the current theme/layout of your blog (Cubic Theme), Khai. I am thinking of using it myself, if you don’t mind… I am getting a little bored with my own theme on my own site.

      • I love it too!

Haha. No worries I don’t mind at all. After all, since we both have a lot of photos, this layout is the best way to maximise the display of the photos. ;D
